Abhyanga a Perfect Home Practice for Winter to settle and nourish your system.

Recently I did an all day lecture on yoga and autoimmune disorders. It was fantastic, I learnt so much. One of the main things they talked about was bringing down the amount of Vata in the body. That unsettled, ungrounded, anxious feeling you get when you’ve been burning the candle at both ends is an example of too much Vata. The number one way they suggested to bring down the excess amount of Vata in the body was to do a daily self oil massage called Abhyanga. The oil is very grounding and nourishing, as is the act of taking the time out to do something so good for yourself. It’s a gorgeous practice and now being winter it’s a great time to start this simple yet super nourishing practice. 
There are a lot of tutorials that go into more details about Abhyanga that you can find online. LIKE THIS ONE But the general gist is taking a 1/4 of a cup of warm seasame oil (coconut could be good in winter with its cooling qualities) and massaging it into the skin prior to bathing. Smooth long strokes on the long bones and circular strokes on the joints. Let the oil soak in for 5-15 minutes if you have time and then rinse off. 

I’ve been doing it almost daily for a while now and I love it. It’s been working really well for my dry Vata constitution in the middle of winter and I’ve been sleeping better since I started too. Enjoy!
